Besides the rich educational opportunities for international students in classrooms, many opportunities to explore lie beyond the Washington University campus. To connect to typical "American" experiences, you are invited to form new friendships and visit new places in St. Louis to learn about American culture. This kind of learning can be as valuable to you as your classroom experiences. Look over the Community Connections pages and get connected!
COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS
The Office for International Students and Scholars offers two Community Connections programs for full-time Washington University international students and scholars. Volunteers are members of the St. Louis community interested in international friendships. These programs are the Speak English With Us (SEWU) and Host Family (HF). While eager students learn about the American culture and immediate community, volunteers further their cross-cultural knowledge and develop friendships that transcend boarders. Students’ homesickness takes a back seat when in the presence of someone willing to offer a friendly ear, shoulder or extended hand. All share the language, foods, cultural norms, fresh perspectives of views on issues, local sites, history, etiquette, holidays and enjoyment of informal, warm fellowship— beyond information contained in books.
In reading about the programs below, students may choose only one of the programs below so that we may accommodate as many requests for volunteers as possible. Matches between students and volunteers run for one year, unless otherwise indicated. Local volunteers may be single adults, single parents, couples with or without children, and retirees. One-semester exchange students are encouraged to select the "Be Our Guest option since we match other programs’ participants for a full year.
