Hello/Ni-Hao/Guten Tag/Buenos Dias:
Washington University has more than 1200 international students each year from up to 81 foreign countries. Some are undergraduates, but most are graduate students studying for technical training not available in their home countries. Most of these young men and women have never been to the United States and are eager to make friends and learn about our country while completing their studies.
The Office for International Students and Scholars Host Family Program pairs international students from Asia, South America, Africa, and Europe with American families for monthly get-togethers, to share activities, interests and ideas. The program is intended as a cultural exchange—families do not provide living accommodations. Many international students are eager to get off campus and share a little time with a family who can make them less lonesome for their own family so far away.
Host Families agree to "host" a student for a minimum of one academic year. During the year, many families attend campus lectures or cultural performances with their students, include students in family celebrations or show them favorite St. Louis dining or entertainment spots. The relationship is an informal one between the family and the student. Through this program, students and families have the opportunity to learn first-hand about the people and culture of another country, and to form a friendship that often lasts much longer than the year or years the student is enrolled at Washington University.
I hope you will take a few minutes to fill out the Application Form so I can match your interests with one of the many students who have applied and are waiting. If you would like further details, please feel free to call me at the Office for International Students and Scholars at 935-5910.
Warmest Regards,
Luisette Behmer
