INFORMATION FOR CURRENT STUDENTS

OISS Programs

Note: All OISS programs are free.

Free Tuesday Lunch for International Students

This on-campus program runs from January until early April and mid-September until mid-December. During these months, join us Tuesdays from 12 noon until 1:00 PM in Umrath Hall for a great opportunity to enjoy free, delicious, homemade meals while socializing with other students and OISS staff members. In addition, each week a different organization (sometimes from on-campus, sometimes from off-campus), will be present to provide informational materials and answer your questions.

Speak English with Us

"Speak English With Us" is a program in which community volunteers meet with a student one hour a week for casual conversation and mutually rewarding cultural exchanges. Meetings may take place on campus, at a home, at a supermarket or department store...the possibilities are endless.

For more information, or to apply, visit the Speak English With Us webpage.

The Host Family Program

The Host Family Program allows students to become unofficial "ambassadors of goodwill" whenever they are invited to a once-a-month event with their "family." Students will already have their own living accommodations and do not room with the volunteers. The nature of your participation depends upon your own interests and those of your assigned volunteer. Museums, on- and off-campus events, informal tours of St. Louis and its "happenings" are enhanced when seen through the eyes of others!

For more information, or to apply, visit the Host Family webpage.

Be our Guest Dinner Program

Members of the Women’s Society of Washington University (WSWU) would like to invite you, the international students and scholars of the University, to join them and their families for an informal meal at home. We hope this will serve as a casual introduction to an American family’s life off campus. It will give the hosts and the guests an opportunity to share different cultures, however briefly. Your hosts can provide not only hospitality but also transportation if it is needed. Certainly if you would like to bring a spouse or a companion with you, they would also be welcomed.

Application to this program will not affect your Speak English with Us or Host Family application.

For more information, or to apply, visit the Be Our Guest webpage.
