INFORMATION ON FILING TAXES

Tax Information for Non-Resident taxpayers

Every foreign national who was present in the United States for any portion of a given calendar year (i.e. Jan 1 - Dec 31) is required by law to file forms with the federal Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and all appropriate state tax offices. This is true regardless of whether or not salary or investment income was earned from a U.S. or foreign source.

If you did not have any income last year, click here for information about Form 8843.

If you did have income last year, see the following information.

The Deadline for Filing most Tax Forms is April 15th

W-2 forms will be mailed mid to late January and Forms 1042-S will be mailed mid to late February. If you have questions about your 1042-S or your W-2, and your employer was Washington University, contact the Washington University Payroll Office as listed below:

Form Purpose of Form When To Expect Who To Call With Questions
W-2 For taxable income not covered by a tax treaty First week of February Washington University Payroll Office
joyce.wiseman@wustl.edu
1042S For tuition covered under a tax treaty Mid to late February Washington University Payroll Office

If your employer was not Washington University and you have questions about your forms, you should contact your employer.

Washington University and the Office for International Students and Scholars are not able to provide assistance or advice regarding filing taxes.

Because of this, we have put together a help sheet to assist in your filing. Resources range from Web addresses where you can download tax forms to programs and services which are available to help you file your forms. These services may be free or for a fee.

Free Assistance

  1. Tax Assistance with CINTAX Software - Non-resident returns only
CINTAX is an online software that will be available at no cost to you. This website will be accessible in February, and an e-mail with instructions and a password will be sent at that time. CINTAX features a step-by-step approach to completing most individual foreign national non-resident returns and will allow you to print out your completed return for filing. Note that CINTAX is only available for federal returns. State returns must be filed using another method.

  2. When you are unable to use CINTAX to file your taxes - Resident returns only
If you have attempted to use CINTAX and the program says you are a "Resident Alien for Tax Purposes", then you cannot use CINTAX to file your taxes. However, free assistance with Resident returns is available at some local libraries in the area. No appointment is needed, and people are helped on a first come, first serve basis.
