INFORMATION FOR CURRENT STUDENTS
Employment for J-1 Students
Introduction
Students in J-1 status have the opportunity to engage in two categories of employment during their Exchange Visitor programs: 1) Academic Training directly related to their academic programs and 2) "other employment" afforded by on-campus jobs, required by the terms of a financial award, or necessitated by severe economic hardship. For information on the first of these categories, refer to the information sheet entitled "Academic Training for J-1 Students." Please see below for details on the provisions included in the second category.
Eligibility

ANY employment in which a J-1 student engages MUST be authorized IN ADVANCE and IN WRITING by an OISS international student advisor.

The student may work no more than 20 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters; the student may work more than 20 hours during intersession breaks (winter and summer).

The student must be in good standing at Washington University at the time s/he is authorized for employment and must continue to engage in a full course of study throughout the employment period; employment authorization is automatically invalidated if the student fails to maintain J-1 status.
Types

Employment that occurs on-campus at Washington University (e.g., work performed for the University or for another employer that provides services directly to the students of the University and operates on the campus of the University)

Employment pursuant to the terms of a scholarship, fellowship, or assistantship (i.e., research, teaching, etc., usually occuring on-campus at Washington University)

Employment that occurs off-campus when necessary because of serious, urgent, and unforeseen economic circumstances which have arisen since acquiring Exchange Visitor status. (Note: Such circumstances must be documented by the student for the review of the OISS advisor.)
