Regulations and Responsibilities

Reporting a Change of Address
Any U.S. address change needs to be reported to the Department of Homeland Security within 10 days of such change. Address changes must also be reported to the OISS via WebSTAC. Read about the requirements to make sure you stay in compliance.

"Visa" and "Status": A Common Confusion
Click here to understand the difference.

Maintaining Your F-1 Student Status
During their stay in the U.S., F-1 students must remain enrolled full-time to maintain their legal status. Any exceptions must receive prior approval by requesting authorization for Reduced Course Load. In some situations, students are required to extend their F-1 status, or, when they fall out of status, must apply for Reinstatement.

Travel Abroad, Visa Renewal, and Reentry
Students who travel abroad and need to return to the U.S. to continue their WU program should obtain a signature on their latest I-20 or DS-2019 by an international student advisor in the month before departing the U.S. Also, if your visa expires before returning to the U.S., you must renew the visa at a U.S. consular offie abroad. There are some exceptions for travel to Mexico and Canada. Any student traveling while on OPT should consult an International Student Advisor regarding the timing of the trip, as well as the documents required to re-enter.

Payroll Process for Continuing Students
If you are working on campus or receiving a stipend, and experience either of the following, an update to your payroll records will be required:

  • Change of Status: If you are a student with on campus employment and have change your status (either to OPT or another status)
  • Extension of Work Authorization: If you are a student with employment whose work authorization was extended by a non-WU program sponsor.
Note: If the change of status or extension was done by the OISS, the OISS Payroll Administrator will update your records automatically in most cases.
Visit Student Payroll Processes for more information.

Applying for a Social Security Number
Students with on-campus employment or authorized for off-campus employment must apply for a Social Security Number as described in the application process.

Filing Your Taxes
Every foreign national who was present in the U.S. for any portion of a given calendar year (i.e. Jan 1 - Dec 31) is required by law to file tax forms with the federal Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and all appropriate state tax offices. This is true regardless of whether or not salary or investment income was earned from a U.S. or foreign source.
