INFORMATION FOR NEWLY ADMITTED STUDENTS

Health Insurance

The cost of medical treatment and hospitalization in the U.S. is extremely high. Washington University thus has a mandatory health insurance program. Students are automatically billed for the fee of this insurance. Your enrollment into the insurance is also automatic upon completing your registration for the first semester of each academic year. Coverage runs from August 1 to January 11, and January 12 to July 31. A full description of the health care coverage is outlined by Washington University’s Student Health and Counseling Service (SHCS) under "Health Insurance."

Spouses and dependents are strongly urged to purchase major medical insurance due to the high cost of medical treatment. Dependent coverage is available through the Washington University Health Insurance at the Aetna/WUSTL website.

The health insurance policy at Washington University does not cover the cost of eye examinations, eyeglasses, or dental work. These services are expensive in the U.S.; therefore, you are advised to have this work completed prior to leaving your country.

HEALTH HISTORY FORM AND IMMUNIZATIONS

New students are required to complete certain online requirements required by Student Health and Counseling Services (SHS) including:

  • Medical/Health History
  • Immunizations
  • Meningitis Information
All Health History, Immunization, and Meningitis information must be submitted via the "SHS Student Portal" using your WUSTL key log-in information. It does NOT have to be completed by a doctor.

The deadline for submitting your Health History, Immunization, and Meningitis information for Fall '11 is September 30, 2011. The Health History, Immunization, and Meningitis information must be completed before you can register for Spring '11 classes. For this reason, we encourage you to submit everything prior to arriving at Washington University.

Required vaccinations include Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR). You should also have a Tuberculin skin test before coming to the U.S. Information about your immunizations must be submitted separate from the Medical History Form and Meningitis information to SHCS through the "SHS Student Portal". For more information on immunizations, go to the SHS website.
