INFORMATION FOR NEWLY ADMITTED STUDENTS

What You Need to Do in the First Days After Arriving in the U.S.

Port of Entry Requirements
Find out about the requirements so you can be prepared.

Orientation Schedules
Spring 2012 schedules will be available in December 2011.

Checking in with the OISS
REMEMBER that as soon as possible after arriving in St. Louis, you MUST report to the OISS, located in the Stix International House at 6470 Forsyth Boulevard. Be sure to bring your passport, entry visa, I-94 and I-20/DS-2019 for yourself and any dependents that came with you. Also, be prepared to provide your initial address in St. Louis. Pick up a Welcome Folder and visit our Resource Room as well.

Reporting Your Address
Within the first 10 days of arrival, you must report your U.S. address to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) by submitting the AR-11, Alien’s Change of Address Form, to the DHS. In addition to reporting your initial U.S. address to the OISS upon checking in, you will need to enter your local address into your WebSTAC account. Read about the requirements to make sure you stay in compliance.

Payroll Requirements for Recipients of Wash U Funds (Step 2)
A recipient of Wash U funds refers to anyone who is receiving funds of any kind from Washington University, including, but not limited to, fellowships, assistantships, and stipends.

After arrival, you will have to visit your department to fill out payroll paperwork (most paperwork must be completed within three days), which will be sent to the OISS for processing. For more information on how to complete the payroll process and get your checks coming, visit Student Payroll Processes.

English Proficiency Testing, if applicable

  • Graduate Students
If your school or department has required you to take an English Proficiency exam, a letter notifying you about the requirement is sent to you along with your visa documents (i.e., I-20 or DS-2019).
    • For exam descriptions, testing schedules, answers to frequently asked questions and other information visit the ELP website.

  • Undergraduate Students
You will receive notification from the English Department if you are required to be tested.

Student ID Cards
You can obtain your student ID card from the Office of Student Records, Room 53 in the Women's Building on the Danforth campus. Medical students can get their student ID card at the Medical School campus at the Office of the Registrar, Room 100 in the McDonnell Science Building. For more info on your student ID card, go to http://aisweb.wustl.edu/studentrecords/home.nsf/pages/ids.

Public Transportation and the U-Pass
As a registered full-time student, you will be eligible to apply for the U-Pass, which is a card that gives you free access to public transportation in St. Louis. For information on how to apply for the pass go to the Wash U Parking and Transportation Services website.
